A doujin way of working, with art and script in separate hands, carried this 40-page short into the hall. Tonari no Seki no Gal to Papakatsu Ecchi Shite Mita was drawn by まと舞 and written by the circle Hamidashi Kanitama.
Set at school, it is an adult doujin manga about a gal short of money who sits at the next desk and a boy in the same class who is an otaku. In the words of the official genre tags its subject is prostitution and compensated dating; it belongs to the type known as papa-katsu stories.
Reviewers agree on the quality of the art and the clarity of the story. The characterization, which sets the gal and the otaku off against each other, also draws praise, and the lingering ending has left many readers asking for a sequel.
Hamidashi Kanitama has been releasing work on DLsite since October 2021, changing subject sharply from one title to the next: the workplace, science fiction, fantasy. This was the fifth of its releases in 2022.
It went on sale on FANZA in November 2022 and on DLsite in December. In the catalogue on hand, DLsite doujin manga with papa-katsu in the title rose from 16 in 2020 to 45 in 2022. The total number of doujin manga grew over the same years, but this book came while the word was still spreading through titles. It ranks 178th among the hall's doujin works.
