A Survey of Long Careers in Adult Manga

AUGUST 2026 EDITION

EROMANGA HALL OF FAME, Research Paper No. 1 ── first published 2026-08. The URL of this page will be maintained permanently; should the contents be revised, the edition marker will be advanced and the revision stated. Method and citation at the foot of the page.

Who is the artist who has gone on drawing ero-manga the longest and is still drawing today?
In ordinary manga, a question like this answers itself. There are ranking features on long-running serials; anniversary issues are assembled for an artist's thirtieth or fortieth year. Adult manga has none of that. Tankobon go out of print and vanish, magazines fold, artists change their names. In a world where the record does not readily survive, no published source counting career length with citations existed, so far as we could find.
So we counted.

Twenty years? Thirty? Or longer still?
As the counting went on, a longer stretch of time than we had expected turned out to run in a single unbroken line. The whole landscape first.

Figure 1 ── Fifty years of adult manga in strata

The working spans of the longest-serving artists, ordered from the earliest debut downward. Gold = active (a new 18+ work confirmed in 2024 or later); grey = dormant, or moved to general-audience magazines. A break in a bar is a hiatus we were able to establish. From the generation of the 1970s ero-gekiga to the generation of today's adult comics magazines, half a century of strata can be taken in at a glance.

The man with three names ── 39 years, still working

To give the answer first: the longest active career belongs to R Koga (あ~る・こが), at 39 years. He debuted in 1986 in the magazine 『ペパーミントCOMIC』 under the name 古賀有勲 (Koga Arukun); from the following year he worked as R・古賀勲, and from 1998 under the present name あ~る・こが ── drawing on through three names in succession, and publishing a new book with Sanwa Shuppan in 2025 as well.

In fairness, that career was never hidden. Look up the Wikipedia entry and both the succession of names and the debut year are set down there (Wikipedia is also the source for the debut year used in this survey). That the question "who is the longest-serving active artist, and for how many years?" nonetheless had no answer is because nobody had lined the artists up and counted. The record of each individual artist exists as a point, and yet the single task of setting those points into one table had somehow gone undone for half a century.

And the moment you try to line them up and count, you fall into a trap. Look at R Koga's works on DLsite, for instance, and the oldest release is 2009 ── on that evidence alone, he looks like a mid-career artist seventeen years in. A digital store's "first appearance" is the date distribution began, not the debut. Most bibliographic databases, too, register artists by name rather than by person, so that a mechanical tally splits the three names into three different people and the 39 years shrink to 27 at most (the span of the current name). Long careers therefore have to be counted by lineage of names, with the sources checked one at a time.

Results I ── The active list

The top thirty among active artists ── those for whom a new work in the 18+ category could be confirmed in 2024 or later. Three things to watch for in reading the table.

① The longest active career is 39 years. An artist still working is closing on the 40-year mark.
② Artists who debuted in the 1990s are conspicuously numerous near the top (why, in Figure 2).
③ Several among them left adult manga at some point and came back.

Artists' names are given in the Japanese original throughout the tables, as elsewhere on this site: most have no established romanization, and an invented one would only obscure the identification. Romanized readings are supplied in the text at first mention where they are established.

The ones who come back

Read down the active list and something odd stands out. A number of these artists had quit.

天竺浪人 (Tenjiku Ronin, 35 years) announced his retirement from adult manga in 2013 and returned in 2017. He draws for Sanwa Shuppan's adult magazines still, and a new tankobon appears in August 2026. 玉置勉強 (Tamaoki Benkyo, 32 years) moved to general-audience magazines in the middle of the 2000s and came back to adult work in 2022, after some sixteen years. RaTe (debut 1993) shifted his centre of gravity to doujin work once the tankobon stopped coming, and in 2021 appeared in the pages of 『COMIC LO』 under a new name, まつかさ ── a commercial return in his twenty-eighth year.

In ordinary manga, an artist retiring and returning to a weekly ten years later is all but unheard of. That returns keep occurring in adult manga is due in part, we think, to the existence of long-lived specialist magazines and publishers ── Sanwa Shuppan, Core Magazine, Akaneshinsha ── which make a veteran's return possible.

Longevity in adult manga, in other words, does not run along a single road. You leave, you draw somewhere else, you come back a dozen years later. The round trip is part of the career too. The breaks in the bars of Figure 1 also show that in adult manga an interruption does not necessarily mean an ending.

The longest of all time is the roughly 43 years of 三条友美 (Sanjo Tomomi), c. 1980–2023. It began with an unsolicited submission to the ero-gekiga magazine 『大快楽』, and he went on drawing until shortly before his death in 2023. Second is ダーティ・松本 (Dirty Matsumoto, 41 years), of the first generation of the 1970s "ero-gekiga" boom; also at 41 years is 田亀源五郎 (Tagame Gengoroh), a master of gay erotic art who has deliberately maintained a general-audience face ── works such as 『弟の夫』 (My Brother's Husband) ── alongside his adult work. Lined up across the boundaries of genre, the longest line an adult-manga career draws falls at "about forty years" ── and that is the other answer this survey gives.

This figure is a landscape of survival by generation. Look first at the points for debuts in the 1970s and 80s. Almost all are grey ── the generation of the sensual gekiga and the lolicon boom largely laid down the pen, in step with the disappearance of the very magazines that carried them.

Among the 1990s debuts, however, gold conspicuously remains. And near the dotted wall ── that is, at the position of "from debut to today, essentially unbroken" ── the gold points cling in a band. That band is made up almost entirely of 1990s debuts. For the first time in the history of adult manga, a generation for which thirty-year careers are ordinary is coming into being ── one of the most interesting findings of this survey.

Why the 1990s cohort? We have no data that would establish causation, but the following may be part of the background. The adult comics magazines on which that cohort fought its battles ── 『快楽天』, 『ホットミルク』, 『コミックマショウ』 and the like ── survived to the present, unlike the gekiga magazines of the generation above. Digital distribution rescued tankobon from the darkness of going out of print, so that older work goes on meeting readers. And, as described above, there are pages to come back to for those who leave. Where the venue survived, the careers survive too ── that, at least, is how the strata of this half century read.

How "thirty years of drawing" becomes "three"

There is, though, a slightly odd problem with this ranking. An artist who has drawn erotic comedy for thirty years can come out at "three years" in the tally.

ながしま超助 (Nagashima Chosuke) is known as an artist who has gone on drawing risqué comedy for close to thirty years, in works such as 『ぷるるんゼミナール』. In this survey's table, though, his activity begins in 2023. Why? Because the convenience-store adult magazines that were his principal battlefield ── 『メンズヤング』 and the like ── are in fact publications without the adult mark: that is, not 18+. The adult mark is the 18+ labelling scheme for tankobon introduced in 1991, and it is the standard on which bookstores zone their shelves. Nagashima first entered that category with a 2023 tankobon from Angel Shuppan.

This is not a question of which way of counting is correct. It is that "adult", as a word, bundles together several worlds with different distribution ── from 18+ adult comics to the risqué magazines of the convenience store. This survey went to the trouble of writing its line explicitly as "release of new work in the 18+ category" precisely so as not to build figures on top of that ambiguity.

The other pitfall is the reissue. ダーティ・松本, second all time, had an e-book out in 2024 as well, but the contents are a reissue of work from the 1980s; his last activity as new work was a gekiga anthology in 2016. That "new arrivals" line up in a digital store is one fact; that an artist is drawing now is another. Count reissues, new editions and re-releases as activity and the working spans of veterans are systematically inflated ── which is why this survey counts new work only.

In closing ── back to the first question

Who is the artist who has gone on drawing ero-manga the longest and is still drawing today?
The answer we can confirm at present was R Koga's 39 years.

What the survey brought into view, though, is not one man's record alone. Names change, magazines vanish, artists step away and sometimes return a dozen years later. And still there are places left in which to publish, and people who go on drawing. The history of adult manga is made not only of works but of those artists' time.

At present, that longest line is close to reaching forty years. The strata of half a century are still quietly accumulating.

There is, however, a continent this map has yet to draw. What this survey counted was commercial magazines and commercial tankobon only, and in the course of the work we met, again and again, artists who look dormant in the commercial record and are active in doujin. うたたねひろゆき (Utatane Hiroyuki) has exactly one adult commercial tankobon, 『COUNT DOWN』 of 1992 ── and yet in doujin he has gone on releasing new adult work for more than thirty years. 千之ナイフ (Senno Knife) too, and 新田真子, have gone on drawing in doujin after the commercial record stopped. Conventions, distribution platforms such as DLsite and FANZA, FANBOX ── now that the means of publishing without a publisher are in place, careers that the commercial record alone cannot capture have become impossible to ignore.

The yardstick of this paper, which counts commercial work only, cannot measure that time. To measure "years active as an artist" with doujin included, one needs the records of that other sea. Fortunately, this library holds a full census of it. The next paper intends to sound those depths.

── METHOD AND NOTES ──

Method

Scope: commercial adult manga ── the male-oriented 18+ category, gay-oriented work included (tankobon carrying the adult-comics mark, appearances in dedicated 18+ adult magazines, and new commercial digital work in the R18 category). Women-oriented 18+ work (TL and BL) travels through a separate distribution system and is outside the scope this time. Definition of "activity": the release of new work in the adult category, and that alone. Reissues, new editions, omnibus volumes, re-releases and digitally recensored editions, together with non-18+ adult-flavoured work (convenience-store risqué magazines and the like), are not counted. Span: starting point = the year of the commercial adult debut (distinguished from a general-audience debut). End point = the year of the latest new adult work that could be confirmed. Long interruptions are counted through, and those established are shown as breaks in Figure 1. Active: artists for whom new adult work could be confirmed within the last three years (2024 or later). Names: alternative names are consolidated into a single artist. Standard of sourcing: artists in the main table require sources for both the debut and the latest activity. Where a year could be narrowed no further than an approximation, it is marked "c."; entries with weaker sourcing are kept out of the main table and quarantined in the separate list below. Data sources: this library's artist-career database (1,385 tankobon, every one sourced), Wikipedia, mangaseek, the Media Arts Database, National Diet Library Search, Hanmoto.com, publishers' official materials, and others. Prior literature: 永山薫 (Nagayama Kaoru), 『エロマンガ・スタディーズ』 (Eromanga Studies, 2006; expanded edition 2014), and 稀見理都 (Kimi Rito), 『エロマンガ表現史』 (A History of Eromanga Expression, 2017), are the forerunners of qualitative research in this field, and much of our understanding of these artists is owed to both books. As a quantitative tally of career length, this paper appears to be the first.

Estimated values (listed separately; sourcing below the standard of the main table)

Primary materials on the working span are insufficient here, and estimation is involved. These cannot be cited at the standard of the tables above ── we leave the names nonetheless, as a handhold for the next researcher. Information is welcome.

Limits

(1) Coverage is not exhaustive. In the world of the 1970s–80s gekiga magazines and vending-machine books especially, it is highly likely that long-serving artists remain undug, their bibliographies scattered. (2) Years marked "c." carry an error of a few years either way. (3) For work predating the adult-mark scheme (1991), appearance in a dedicated adult magazine was taken as adult-category work. (4) Doujin activity is outside the tally and is treated in the notes only. (5) Women-oriented 18+ work is outside the scope. Corrections and additions are welcome through the contact page.
