Two friends who cross a line and stay friends is subject enough for a whole book. Otaku Tomodachi to no Sex wa Saikou ni Kimochi Ii enters the hall because it never misjudges that distance.
Maeda and Miyoshi are classmates from the same university year, otaku friends who share a taste in manga. One event carries them over the line, and still the name of what they are to each other does not change.
Readers agree on three things. The first is the opening conversation: its evasions and awkward back-and-forth feel true to life, and talk about the manga they love slides straight into what the two of them do. The second is the bodies, ordinary and recognizable, yet drawn with all the fullness the medium allows; the glasses and the braids stay on to the end. The third is the distance itself. The air of two people who are close without being lovers is what readers keep naming as the heart of the book.
The artist Alp publishes doujin work as Ringoya and has three commercial books in the Commercial Works Hall. This one was distributed at Comic Market 101, then released on FANZA in January 2023 and on DLsite that March. An original work issued between installments of the circle's "Holiday" series, it appeared at about the same time as Alp's third collected volume.
It stands at 31st among doujin works. The sequel, Otaku Tomodachi to no Sex wa Saikou ni Kimochi Ii 2, is also in the hall, so both books of the series are inside the gate.
