In the study of a father lost in some obscure research, a girl meets a creature that is not an animal. The cat she doted on has vanished. She keeps the wordless thing without telling anyone. She knows nothing about sex, and so what is done to her never registers as anything but affection.

All forty-four pages are in full colour and the hand never slackens, not on the last of them. The sheen of slime, the creases in a dress, light falling through a great house, the surface of bathwater — readers point to the same details every time. The creature is drawn as genuinely uncanny, yet neither disgust nor cruelty is set beside it. That balance is the book's invention, and a reader of the simplified Chinese edition called it a true story of pure love. Japanese readers land in the same place. It is why so many of them open by explaining that an ad banner brought them here, or that they do not normally read this kind of book at all.

Connect is the only story KOMOTA has released on DLsite. Part Two followed the next year, and official translations lined up beside them in English, simplified and traditional Chinese, Korean and Spanish. An all-ages edition now sits on the shelves of ordinary ebook stores.
