A first book that readers had waited six years for went on to top a specialist Akihabara shop's chart for 2008. Shoujo Material stands in the hall on that record and on the narrative weight it packs into short stories.
It gathers ten pieces that ran in COMIC Kairakuten between 2002 and 2008. 2/4 follows the drifting hearts of two girls who each have someone; Kura draws a couple who have eloped into the secrets of an old family house; around them sit stories that lean toward fantasy and science fiction.
Reviewers agree first on the strength of the drawing, and fellow artist Mitakurumi said in 2009 that Hanaharu Naruko's art was simply a treat for the eyes. Readers also converge on plots with real substance, close attention to inner life, and an aftertaste that keeps its wistfulness without turning sour.
Naruko debuted in Kairakuten in 2002 and went on to draw the magazine's covers on a regular basis. On this book's release day queues reportedly formed in Akihabara. It remains Naruko's only adult collection; later work widened into original character designs for anime such as Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet.
At Toranoana's Akihabara No. 1 store it was the top-selling adult comic for both the first half of 2008 and the full year, and it placed second in FANZA's mail-order ranking for the year. It took third in the 2008 Eromanga Taisho, a readers' poll run by volunteers on 2channel, and that vote is how it entered EHOF. It ranks 231st among the hall's commercial works.
