Somejima has long drawn the drop from strength to ruin through women who are not quite human. Zecchou Shoujo stands in the hall as a collection, published three years after the artist's debut, that sets out that approach across eleven chapters.
It is an adult collection centred on what Japanese readers call ochi-mono, stories of a fall: powerful, haughty women, from the female officers of an evil organisation to the queen of a demon realm, brought by betrayal and assault to yield to pleasure. The settings lean toward fantasy, from the demon world and a war between angels and devils to cyberspace and a fox village, and there are also stories built on hypnosis and an invisible man.
Reviews converge on the plot of a woman of rank and pride losing her footing through her subordinates' betrayal, on forceful composition, and on the range of the faces. Readers on both stores also note that some stories close on a comic beat, so the book never sinks into grimness.
The newly drawn closing story, End of Justice, is a sequel to the opening one, Over Justice, so the book begins and ends with the same evil organisation. All nine of Somejima's collections, from the 2010 debut on, have come out in Kill Time Communication's Unreal Comics line; this is the third, and its stories first ran in the same publisher's Comic Unreal.
The print edition appeared in February 2013 and the digital one that July. It is the only one of the artist's books in the hall, where it stands 233rd among commercial works.
