Sales and votes do not always choose the same book. Mai FAVORITE stands in the hall as one that came out near the top of both in 2009.
Shotaro, a university student, visits the mansion of a grandfather he has never met and is welcomed, along with a fortune, by a household of maids who compete to become his personal attendant. To this title series the adult collection adds a short story about a woman and her husband's younger brother, and two linked stories about a school health monitor; its subject is a harem of maids.
Each chapter of the series brings one maid to the front, and their temperaments are drawn distinctly. A review at the time of publication named, as the artist's signature, a style that joins a realist line to the charm of anime drawing, and a frank readiness to answer the reader's wishes without second thoughts. Later readers praise the drawing as well.
It was Kisaragi Gunma's third collection, and the title series ran from the very first issue of COMIC HOTMiLK, a magazine launched in 2007. A review of the next book, Sweethearts, read its narrowing to two heroines as a maturing from the large cast of this one.
The print edition came out in April 2009. It topped Toranoana's weekly chart in its week of release, finished second for the year at the chain's Akihabara store A, led FANZA's yearly mail-order chart for printed books, and came third in the Eromanga Taisho reader vote. The digital edition followed in 2013. It ranks 191st among commercial works.
