A structure that cannot be grasped in a single reading turned a newcomer's first book into one that has been read for years. Imako System stands in the hall for that design.
It is a linked series centred on Ichina and Imako, who grew up under one roof as step-siblings, and it traces the warping of their relationship in a narration where the protagonist's delusions and reality run together without a seam. Its subject matter includes drugs, netorare and chōkyō, or coercive conditioning, and after a heavy passage the story comes to rest in a calm ending.
Readers converge on the delicate, painstaking line and on the heroine: bespectacled, easily swayed, a little odd and wholly guileless. They have also taken as part of the book's character the way scenes that puzzle on first encounter turn out, further on, to have been foreshadowing.
This is Midori no Rupe's book debut, published by Akaneshinsha in 2010. The stories first ran in COMIC Tenma, and the volume gathers every chapter of the Imako series together with two short pieces and a newly drawn epilogue. An anime adaptation followed in 2014.
The book entered this hall through an award, fourth place in the Eromanga Taisho for 2010. It also sold in the print era: at Toranoana's Akihabara Store A it placed eighth among the store's 2010 bestsellers, and sixty-second on the store's all-time list of 100 covering July 2009 to August 2022. The year on the roster, 2015, is that of the digital edition; it ranks 201st among the hall's commercial works.
