It keeps its eye on the poverty that runs beneath rough lives, and its sweet drawing style never looks away. Bokobokorin! stands in the hall for the sharpness of that gaze; it is Shiruka Bakaudon's first collection.
Its eight short stories are set against poverty and broken homes: some follow girls exposed to violence and sexual assault, others follow badly behaved girls who meet their comeuppance. It belongs to what Japanese readers call kichiku-kei, the brutal school of adult manga.
Readers agree that the poverty at the bottom of each story becomes a lens on contemporary life. They return, too, to the gap between a style that recalls girls' manga and the merciless subject matter, and to drawing that spends its effort less on violence than on the mind; one reader says the book reads like a casebook of real crimes.
The author debuted professionally in Comic Mate in December 2014, and that debut story is collected here. This is the only adult collection under the name; from 2017 the author serialized Kimi ni Aisarete Itakatta in Weekly Manga Action.
The print edition came out from Mediax in 2016 and placed 46th that year in FANZA's annual mail-order chart of printed adult comics. It was one of five category-prize winners in Kono Ero-Manga ga Sugoi! 2016, chosen by industry figures, and that award is how it entered EHOF. The digital edition carries the Issuisha name. It stands 178th among the hall's commercial works.
