Horror is a thinly populated corner of adult manga. Etsuran Chuui stands in the hall as the starting point of an artist who brought the voice of the Japanese ghost story into it.
It is a short-story collection that draws on urban legends and ghost stories, joining sexual encounters with the uncanny to endings that close in fear. The last train, a stigmatized apartment, a mountain legend, a dream, a rumour about a phone call: everyday modern life is the way in. The official tags also list non-consensual themes such as assault.
What readers agree on almost without exception is that fusion itself. After the sexual scene, the truth comes out and a chilling ending follows. The staging relies on neither jump scares nor gore, frightening instead through stillness, and readers compare it to television anthologies of the strange. Others praise the rendering of night, and the ability to build a full story in about 20 pages.
Iwasaki Yuuki's Kaerimichi nite was selected in the COMIC BAVEL New Comic Grand Prize, and the publisher presents it as the first entry ever selected for the prize. This is the first collection, and it includes that story; Etsuran Kinshi and Etsuran Funou followed under the same name.
The print edition came from Bunendo in August 2019. A digital edition adds a newly drawn story. An English-language database also lists official English editions. Only four commercial works in the hall carry horror among their official genres. It stands 58th among the hall's commercial works.
