Give a relationship a name and the story starts to move. "Mesudachi" built the template for an entire series out of a single coinage.
Set in a rural village with little to do, it follows a boy from a timber family and the landowner's daughter he has known all his life. Two friends who needle each other constantly, they do not become a couple; they stay friends, in a friends-with-benefits arrangement. The title is a coined word for exactly that.
Z-ton, the artist behind the circle SHIS, made the heroine a sparring partner who teases in a boyish register. What readers name as the heart of the book is that it holds to a distance further than lovers and closer than friends all the way to the end. The other point raised again and again is the alternation of the two interior monologues. When she reveals, from her side, that the teasing hid how much it stung not to be seen as a woman, the beginning stops being a one-sided event.
It is the circle's second release on DLsite, and the series has since run to nearly ten volumes. A two-episode OVA followed across 2022 and the next year, carrying a word coined in a 2017 doujin all the way to an animated title. Official editions exist in six languages besides Japanese, and the book has an entry in the English-language reference databases. It stands 22nd among doujin works.
