The older woman in these stories usually harbours some fondness for the boy. The woman in Maid no Oshigoto. does not. That is where the book begins.

In a house with no mother in it, a maid of thirty-five has looked after the young master since he was an infant. He reaches adolescence and does something he should not with her underwear. Scolded for it, he asks to be shown. The thirty-four pages start moving from there.

She agrees, but not out of affection. She lines up the ways of settling the matter without disturbing her employer's household and without wounding the boy, and this is the least bad of them. The back half of the book is given to her monologue: no outburst, no fury, only a voice establishing what has happened and assembling her own next steps. Her face does not change during the act, and she feigns pleasure out of consideration for him. The drawing faces the same way — a chest that has dropped a little, pubic hair left untended, nothing subtracted for the sake of youth.

Araki Rappo, the artist behind the circle, has been publishing maid books commercially since 2015; the word appears in nearly every one of the collected titles. This volume was sold at Comic Market 95 before it went digital, and it remains the largest thing Jinsei Yokosuberi., running since 2012, has released. The series ran to five volumes and a final chapter.

Sixth in the older-woman-younger-boy category, fourth among shota. The sequel, Maid no Oshigoto. II, is in the hall as well. It sits on both stores, but not behind the same cover: the FANZA edition carries a separately drawn one, and most of its readership is there.
