Maid no Oshigoto. II fulfils what a sequel owes its predecessor by taking the adult who settled matters in the first book, unsettling her in the days that follow, and letting her scold. That is why it stands in the hall.
It is an adult work in the older-woman-younger-boy genre about Misato, a maid in her thirties, and the adolescent young master she has raised in his mother's place, and it is the second instalment of the series. After the events of the first book, the story moves forward from her side, as she struggles both as a hired servant and as a stand-in mother. Its subjects are the gap in age, the gap between servant and master, and the position of a surrogate mother.
The scene readers mention most is the one in which she slaps the boy for behaving selfishly. Separate reviews name it as what sets her apart from the older figure who accepts everything. Others read her as a woman who cannot quite inhabit either role, mother or maid. The monologue that anchored the first book continues here, and is said to give the character real weight.
Areki Raiho, the artist behind the circle Jinsei Yokosuberi., released this 40-page book at Comic Market 96 in the summer of 2019, about seven months after the first. It was the circle's tenth work.
Several readers tag it "serious", and some reviews read it as human drama. It ranks twelfth in the older-woman-younger-boy category, where it sits alongside the first book, two entries from one series.
