Readers' votes brought this book into the hall. Under EHOF's selection rules Hatsuinu entered on its record as the winner of the 2006 Eromanga Taisho reader poll, yet in the print era it was already the starting point of a series that spread into sequels, an OVA, an all-ages edition and an English translation.
It is the first book by the artist Inu: an adult romantic-comedy collection built around three linked chapters about a boy and Fujino, a silent classmate he meets on a packed commuter train, followed by six short stories, school stories among them.
Readers almost unanimously name Fujino's characterisation as the heart of the book: taciturn, expressionless, impossible to read. The drawing catches the small changes that surface through that scant expression, and turns her opacity into humour and charm. Many reviews look back fondly on the line work and colouring of the 2000s, and say that they have not aged.
In Akihabara in 2007, the second volume and the OVA drew attention in the same week, and in 2008 the concluding third volume placed fourth for the year at Toranoana's Akihabara No. 1 store. The series was later reissued as a complete edition for all ages, and Fantagraphics published it in English.
The first print volume came out from Issuisha in 2006, and DLsite began selling it digitally in 2010. It was still appearing near the top of the daily chart in 2021, finding new readers long after publication. It stands 164th among the hall's commercial works.
