A collection of short stories can be judged by whether any of them falls flat. Renai Sample stands in the hall as Homunculus's second book, one whose sixteen stories readers found without a single misfire.

It gathers work from COMIC Kairakuten published between 2011 and 2013 and adds five newly drawn epilogues. Childhood friends, lovers, relatives: two people who already care for each other find their way together, almost always within the frame of a sincere romance. Alongside Natsu no Kemono, a reunion with an older cousin on the eve of her wedding, there are stories of teacher and student, and reviewers note more characters of school age than in the first book.

The clean line keeps its softness in color and in black and white alike. The heroines are given distinct temperaments, and the psychological work carried by their faces shows its full skill when the stories are read together.

It came two and a half years after Hajirai Break, and readers saw the drawing settle further. The heroine on the cover was chosen before publication by a reader popularity poll. In 2025 the two books were reissued together in a new edition.

The print edition came out in December 2013, topping Toranoana's mail-order adult book chart that month and placing sixth for the year at its Akihabara A store. It entered EHOF on records that include second place in the 2013 Ero-Manga Grand Prize, a readers' poll run by volunteers on the 2channel message board, and an English edition followed in 2026. It stands 123rd among the hall's commercial works.
