It lets go of neither the fear nor the sex. Hachishaku Hachiwa Keraku Meguri: Igyou Kaikitan stands in the hall as a book that retells internet ghost stories for adults while keeping them working as horror.
It is an omnibus of eight stories drawn from tales that spread online, among them Hasshaku-sama, Kunekune and Saruyume. On a rainy night, a woman taxi driver and a young male passenger take turns telling ghost stories, and once the telling is done, the frame story itself begins to move. Its subject is sex with the supernatural, including tentacles and non-consent, and it also contains stories of boys who fall under an apparition's spell.
What reviewers agree on is a fear that still works as horror with the sex taken out. The stories stay faithful to their sources while adding interpretations of their own, and readers also point to the two-page spreads and to drawing detailed enough to convey a presence that must not be approached. An episodic edition with the sexual content removed is read on another store simply as ghost stories.
It is Joka's third collection from G-Walk, published in print at the end of January 2016. The last three stories were drawn new for the book.
The print edition placed twelfth in FANZA's mail-order annual comics ranking for 2016, and the book was adapted as an OVA. Hasshaku-sama has been drawn again and again since it was posted to an online forum in 2008, and an encyclopedia entry on the legend lists this book among its related works. It stands 67th among the hall's commercial works.
