Most adult manga collections close within a single volume. Brandish stands in the hall as the starting point of a serial that ran for seven and a half years and six volumes.
Written by Rusty Soul and drawn by Alto Seneka, it is a long-form fantasy built around Ziska, a succubus girl who is the Demon King's daughter, and Teo, a boy who carries a hero's blood, and it follows the conflict between the demon realm and the hero's party. Its subject is the non-human, and the official genre tags include shota. The first volume collects seven linked chapters.
Readers agree on a bright comic tone that keeps gloom out of the story, and on a catchy, wide-eyed drawing style. Many of the characters who last until the end assemble here for the first time, and the volume goes on being read as the opening of the whole story.
The serial began in 2007, less than a year after COMIC Unreal was launched. A contemporary reviewer observed that fantasy stories of sexual violence then dominated the magazine and that this cheerful series stood apart; as the magazine shifted toward consensual stories, the series became its flagship. For the doujin circle VENOM, the duo of Rusty Soul and Alto Seneka, this was a second adult collection, and the first volume keeps the drawing of the serial's early years.
The print first volume appeared in December 2007, the digital edition in 2008. The series went on to a drama CD and an OVA, and the limited edition of its final volume took first place in FANZA's mail-order annual comics ranking for 2014. It stands 66th among the hall's commercial works.
