Ren'ai Specialite stands in the hall as the turning point at which emily let shadow into the sweet love story and took the work a step deeper.
The first book assembled entirely from work serialised in COMIC BAVEL, it is an adult collection of six romances. In Love Replica, a girl who has run away from home begins a new life as a maid; Pastel Jelly follows a pair of idols on stage and off. These contemporary stories are joined by two that return to the world of Princess Maid, from the previous book, and see it from another side.
Readers of the previous book and readers of this one, independently, describe the same change. Attachment and longing cast a shadow over what had been bright love stories, and the weight shifts toward inner life and narrative. The gap between the charming drawing and the damp, heavy mood of the stories is named as the thing to read for, and chapters running past 30 pages give it room. The two otherworld stories leave a bitter aftertaste; the rest close in happiness.
The serialisation overlapped with the final stretch of Pan de Peace!, emily's four-panel comedy for general readers, and some reviewers say they first came to emily through that work.
The print edition was released in March 2018. FANZA led the digital release the following month with an exclusive edition, and DLsite followed in May. It ranks 235th in the commercial hall.
