The artist's name and the book's title announce the same style. Ahegao o Sarasu Midara na Otome stands in the hall as a collection that takes a hand devoted to facial expression and carries it through eight settings, from fantasy to science fiction.
It gathers eight short stories in which women with a mission fall into enemy hands: a warrior bound to cursed armour, a reporter chasing a scoop and, on the cover, a transforming heroine who accepts the enemy's contest to rescue her captured boyfriend. Its subjects are assault by tentacles, machines and other species and the descent into pleasure, and some stories carry a netorare thread. The title's key word is adult-manga shorthand for a face undone by pleasure.
What reviewers name first is the rendering of expression, which works as Ahemaru's signature. They also note how the heroines are first established as strong-willed champions of justice, so that the setup builds a drop. The settings range freely across Western fantasy, the near future and the transforming-heroine genre, and the endings change from story to story. Many reviews also praise the sheer level of the draughtsmanship.
It is Ahemaru's second solo collection, after Ahekko Tengoku in 2018, and the first with Kill Time Communication. A third, NTR na Sekai, followed from another publisher the next month.
The print edition appeared in the 2D Dream Comics line in August 2021 and placed 56th in FANZA's mail-order ranking for that year. It ranks 236th among the hall's commercial works.
