When a magazine folds, an artist's work does not stop; it passes on to the next set of pages. Milky Pocket stands in the hall as the book emily assembled at exactly that seam, in the move from COMIC Potpourri Club to COMIC BAVEL.

It is an adult collection of short stories drawn from both magazines, with one new piece added, and its centre of gravity is the sweetness between couples. A three-part school serial and stories of siblings and of newlyweds sit alongside Princess Maid, a fantasy about an otherworldly princess and a hero, whose world carries on into the next book.

Its reputation rests on a soft line and a gentle atmosphere. Reviewers agree that the drawing holds steady to the final page, and they single out the smiles in everyday moments, such as a shared meal. Others read a quieter undertone: characters who hesitate over what they are to each other, and whose wavering lends the sweetness some weight.

emily debuted in 2009. When Potpourri Club ceased publication in September 2015, emily moved to BAVEL, then barely a year old. This was the first book emily published with its publisher, Bunendo, and in the same year, 2016, emily's four-panel comedy for general readers, Pan de Peace!, was adapted for television.

The print edition came out in May 2016. It placed 19th in sales for the first half of that year at a Toranoana shop in Akihabara, and 36th in the annual ranking of DMM.com's mail-order store. It ranks 210th in the commercial hall.
