Fur and scales are what make a monster girl, and each has to be drawn on its own terms. How to Conquer Monster Girls stands in the hall for rendering non-human bodies with sure draughtsmanship and setting them inside a comic fantasy.
Its spine is Omnivore Hero, three chapters about a hero of superhuman stamina who travels the land taking up with the monster girls of the Demon King's army he was sent to defeat. Around it are three two-part stories, set on an island of fish-dragon folk, in a hospital for demi-humans, and in a laboratory developing a drug that turns people into monster girls. It is a monster-girl collection in the cross-species genre.
Readers single out the drawing. A centaur's horse body sits without strain, and the textures are kept distinct: fur, reptile skin, the scales of a mermaid. The hero's chapters are played as comedy, and the deadpan of a hero who casually declines a legendary sword, together with a punchline closing each chapter, makes the book a pleasure simply as reading. Whatever the title suggests, the mood stays gentle throughout.
It is Mizone's third print collection, from G-Walk, the publisher of the debut, and it followed Monster Smash by four months. Where that book kept its heroines close to human form, this one ventures further toward animal bodies.
FAKKU published the English edition under this title, digitally in 2019 and in print the following year. It ranks 112th in the commercial hall.
