A first book tends to hold both what an artist will go on to refine and what the artist will later set aside. Onigashima no Iinazuke stands in the hall as the starting point of Mizone, an artist who has drawn non-human heroines ever since, kept here with its full range intact.

It gathers eleven stories that ran in QooPA! from 2013, and it is a monster-girl collection in the cross-species genre. Its women include an oni, a dragon-kin, a lamia, a mermaid, goat and deer centaurs, a fox and a cat. Most of the stories are mutual romances, but some take incest, gang rape, coercion and netorare as their subjects. The oni girl of the title appears only in the opening story.

What readers agree on is range: the range of species, and the range in how far each heroine stands from the human. Already in this debut the designs run from girls who are human but for horns or ears to figures whose lower bodies are four-legged animals. The expressiveness of the faces is praised again and again.

Published in 2015, it was Mizone's first book. Three years passed before the second print collection, Bakemono Ecchi, and from then on the books put romance at their centre. Here, stories that point toward that later romance sit beside darker ones of a kind the artist seldom returned to.

A specialist review blog for adult manga took it up soon after release, and more than five years after it went on sale at DLsite it climbed back near the top of the weekly chart. It ranks 131st in the commercial hall.
