It gave the interspecies genre a single world to live in: a land rebuilding after a war. Fukkou!? Ishu Kouhai stands in the hall as a book that assembles stories of humans and monsters into a connected cycle.
A hero has ended the war, and humans and monsters now share the work of restoring a ruined world. Against that common backdrop the book sets eight fantasy episodes, each pairing a human with a catoblepas, a werewolf, an orc, a harpy or another creature, and it includes couples in which the monster is male as well as couples in which the monster is female. By subject it belongs to the interspecies genre, and its theme is the bearing of children across the line between species.
Readers' reviews start from the observation that interspecies stories usually cast the woman as a victim, and they have taken this book instead as a set of love stories with happy endings. The examples they cite are the court recorder and the demon who work side by side as colleagues, the orc and the village maiden, and the two-part story of the woman hero who ended the war.
Reviewers keep returning to Okuva's dense hand-lettered sound effects. Each episode is followed by a four-panel epilogue that settles the reader before the next one begins. The world carries over from story to story while each episode keeps a premise of its own, and that is why readers describe the book as more than an ordinary anthology.
The episodes were first released one by one in digital form, then collected in print in August 2018 under G-Walk's MOOG COMICS imprint. Among Okuva's books held by the National Diet Library, it is the first. It stands 74th among the hall's commercial works.
