The women are nursery teachers, a nun, an older girl from a school club, a demon who drinks years. Each welcomes the boy in a gentle voice and, in the same gentle voice, closes off his exits. Not one story turns the tables back.

HANABi draws in volume. Skin softened by sweat, the way a pressed breast gives, compositions that convert the height difference between adult and child straight into pressure on the page. What readers write down over and over is the unease of hearing sweetness in the words while the acts refuse to soften to match. Again and again they record that the cover led them to expect one book and they finished another. Maternal warmth and cruelty, this volume argues, are not kept in separate rooms.

It gathers work from Girls forM, a magazine that prints only scenes in which the man is on the receiving end, and it is the artist's first collection. The same subject had long been pursued in self-published work.

One hundred eighty-eight pages. One of the stories was later adapted as an audio work. Among the hall's commercial works it stands twenty-eighth.
