The second volume of a long story has to do more than carry forward the momentum of the first. Brandish 2 follows the first volume into the hall as the turning point that redraws the lines of the story's conflict.
Written by Rusty Soul and drawn by Alto Seneka, it is the second volume of a long-form fantasy in which Ziska, a succubus girl who is the Demon King's daughter, pursues the young hero Teo and his party. Here her father the Demon King appears; called to account for what she did in the first volume, Ziska breaks with him and resolves that no other demon will be allowed to bring the hero down. The official genre tags include shota and reverse rape, and the volume contains non-consensual scenes as well as an element of incest between Ziska and her father.
A review posted on the day of release pointed to new characters brought in, familiar ones given depth, and how much Ziska's familiar, Nerin, had changed. Readers who came to it after the series ended single out a journey grown livelier as the party gains companions and an adventure working on a larger scale. Read during the serial as a deepening of its cast, the volume is read today, across the finished story, as its turning point.
The print second volume arrived at the end of 2008, first as a limited edition with a drama CD scripted by Rusty Soul: the series' first step beyond the printed page. The digital edition followed in 2009.
Of the six volumes, only the first and this one stand in the hall, a record that readers followed the story past its entrance. It stands 102nd among the hall's commercial works.
