Readers take the "thorns" of the title to mean the temperament of heroines who cannot quite say what they feel. Shoujo no Toge turns those thorns into sixteen bright love stories, and it stands in the hall as Hisasi's third book, the one that took over the top of the shop charts from the book before it.
It collects stories published between 2010 and 2013 across four magazines. They follow romances between boys and heroines with an edge, among them classmates, older women and maids, and a few deal with siblings or with an uncle and niece. It has been read as a book that keeps dark stories out.
Readers agree on the beautiful art and character design and on the beauty of the colour pages, and they note the range of the heroines' temperaments and dress. One reviewer at the time of release placed the drawing at the front line of the day.
It is Hisasi's third collection, arriving eleven months after the second, at a time when Hisasi was drawing the covers of COMIC Kairakuten Beast.
The print edition came out at the end of December 2013, the digital one the following year. At Toranoana's Akihabara Store A it topped both the half-year and the annual chart for 2014, the first time an artist had led that store's annual list two years running. It is also third on the store's all-time list, and K-BOOKS Akihabara's new building put it first for the first half of 2014. It was picked for the summer 2015 edition of Kono Ero-Manga ga Sugoi!, and an English edition was published. It stands 198th among the hall's commercial works.
