This book takes body modification, the subject most closely tied to its author, puts it in the title, and builds it into a tale of revenge and redemption. Ubawarete Ataerareta Mono -Chounyuu Kaizou- stands in the hall for the sureness of that construction.
In a world where nobles who wield magic rule over commoners, Mia works her way out of poverty to become an apothecary and takes a post in a great noble's household. There she is forced to undergo transformation by magic potions and insects, and the power that wakes in her turns her toward revenge. It is an adult fantasy collection whose subjects are body modification and non-consent.
Her revenge taken, Mia is hunted as a witch, until in a newly drawn final chapter she is rescued by a boy who has seen her true kindness. That so heavy a story arrives at genuine consolation is the point on which readers agree most. One review also singles out how firmly the setting holds together: because magic is not all-powerful, medicine is prized.
The companion piece Makai Kanshu Gijie shares its world with the previous book, Makai Shokubutsu Gijieru Sensei, while Kamo no Ongaeshi is a short comic turn on a folktale. Shiina Kazuki has been described as an artist who can move between loneliness and absurdity, and this one volume holds both. It was the seventh book, eleven years after the first, and came three years before Isekai Shoukan widened the artist's audience.
The title story was released in single chapters from February 2016, and the print volume followed that August. It entered through the sales gate and ranks 253rd in the commercial hall.
