A fox in disguise comes to live with the man who helped her. With a title story built on the bones of a folktale, Bake Bare! stands in the hall as the book by Shiina Kazuki that has gathered the most ratings in the digital age.
A fox mother and daughter come to a small animal clinic and try to pay for treatment with counterfeit money. The young vet sees through them, takes the case anyway, and ends up sharing his home with them. Around this title story the book gathers short pieces about demons, angels, gods and other beings who are not human, making it an adult fantasy collection; its official genre tags include angels and demons, shota and body modification.
A review written just after publication found the clean, anime-style drawing, which gives each of its non-human heroines warmth and a distinct look, among the more approachable work in a magazine full of idiosyncratic artists. Readers of the digital edition agree on the sweet, gentle course of the title story. Darker endings wait in the back half of the book, though, and the tragedy of a prequel to the previous volume, Inran Ningyou Hime, left several readers shaken.
It was the fourth book by an artist whose first collection had appeared in 2005, and the third from Kill Time Communication, Shiina's publisher since 2008. The stories first ran in Comic Unreal. A second volume, Zoku Bake Bare!!, followed in 2013 and made it a two-book series.
The print edition came out in 2011; 2012, the year on the hall's roster, is that of the DLsite digital release. It entered through the sales gate and ranks 115th in the commercial hall.
