APPRECIATION ── BY EHOF

Defeat is a form in its own right. Ochita Mesubuta-tachi stands in the hall as that form worked out across a run of short pieces.

A transforming heroine, an exorcist, a kunoichi, a knight, a bounty hunter. Strong, proud, and off their guard. Each of the eleven stories opens with the woman demonstrating her strength, and then takes her apart in order — by machine, by ice, by tentacle, or by the very people she looked down on. Tendou Masae offers no rescue.

The design of the collection does the work. A story runs about sixteen pages and narrows to the single point at which victor and defeated change places. When the machines take over, the body responds to a monotony only a machine could produce; the machine is not standing in for a person, and readers have said so again and again. The drawing is soft, while the fight scenes are staged and paced with the bones of gekiga. That gap is what keeps the descent readable to the last page.

Nijigen Dream Comics, launched by Kill Time Communication in 2004, is a long-lived label built on the violation of fighting heroines. The artist has been with it since the years when it began issuing single-artist volumes, and this book is its four hundred and seventy-ninth.

Among the hall's commercial works, this one sits eighth.

The figures are an automated tally of public data from DLsite (commercial) and FANZA Books; nothing is adjusted by hand. The score and the ranking follow the formulas published in full in the Selection Criteria. The appreciation text is written by EHOF and has no connection to the rights holders or the retailer.
