A first collection sometimes arrives with the artist's high-water mark already inside it. Knospenmadchen stands in the hall as one of those books.

Half the volume belongs to Adagio, told across three parts. A school nurse in a rural town has been quietly working his way through the girls in his care until a transfer student catches him at it. From there the upper hand passes back and forth between them. Whether she is the one tormenting or the one being taken apart, she does not flinch, and readers keep remarking how much ground the relationship covers in so few pages before it turns into something else entirely.

Mameojitan draws thin and leaves the page bright. Reader after reader reaches independently for the same word: transparency. In the sex scenes the man is pulled almost entirely out of frame, so that the girl's body and expression carry the panel alone, and yet he is still written as a person with a temperament of his own. That balance is what makes the reversals land. Even at the harshest moments the drawing never turns muddy, and readers say so with something close to surprise.

The stories ran in Akaneshinsha's COMIC Koh and in its successor COMIC Aoha. The book appeared in the gap between the one closing and the other beginning. From the following year the artist took on a game adaptation, and that work carried through to a major publisher's pages and to an official traditional-Chinese edition.

Ninth among the commercial works in the hall. English-language databases hold an entry and nothing further; there is still no licensed English edition.
