Petanko Bitch stands in the hall because the expressive drawing Tanabe Kyou put into it kept the book in readers' hands in print and in digital form alike, and carried it to the top of a digital chart at the close of the year after it was published.
It is an adult collection in the lineage known as loli or tsurupeta, with young girls as its subject. A serial called Puchi Tomo, about the trio on the cover, is joined by four newly drawn colour pages and six standalone stories. Some pieces take up a brother and sister, or cuckoldry, as their subject, and others turn to adult characters such as a married woman.
Readers single out the faces before anything else. Clear eyes whose expression shifts from scene to scene are praised together with a sure sense of composition, and the line is credited with building depth through its varying weight and its placement of solid blacks. Several readers find, in the stories about adults, a reach of draughtsmanship beyond what the title suggests.
Tanabe Kyou made a book debut in 2014, and this is the third collection. The stories ran in Comic Megastore Alpha from the summer of 2016 to the autumn of the following year, and every one of the artist's books has come from Core Magazine.
The print edition appeared at the end of 2017 and within little more than a month had reached fifteenth place in FANZA's mail-order comic chart for the year. A digital release followed in 2018, and by the close of that year it stood first on DLsite's daily and weekly charts. Reviews record readers who already owned it on paper buying it again. It stands 60th among the hall's commercial works.
