A tentacle story need not be a story of defeat. Maken no Kishi stands in the hall as a heroic tale built by turning that convention inside out.
It is a fantasy in which a princess, bound by contract to a magic sword with a mind of its own, joins an elf princess and a dwarf princess to defend her kingdom against an army of monsters. Its subjects are tentacles and marriage across species. With a newly drawn epilogue, the story is complete in a single volume.
In most tentacle fiction the heroine is defeated by an enemy; here the tentacles belong to the sword the princess carries, and so stand on her side. Readers single out this reversal first, and then a bright tone lightened by romantic comedy. Many also agree on the sword itself, a self-styled villain whose past comes to light midway, on a structure that ties up every thread, and on the warmth of the ending. The density of the drawing draws comment as well.
Namonashi made a book debut in 2008 with the tentacle work Tentacle Lovers, and from 2014, with NTR2, also became known for cuckoldry. This fifth book returns to the tentacles of the starting point, now given a fantasy epic to carry them.
Serialised from the very first issue of COMIC ExE, it appeared in print from GOT in 2018 and placed nineteenth for the first half of that year at Toranoana's Akihabara A store. The digital edition reached the top of DLsite's daily and weekly charts within days of release. It stands 173rd among the hall's commercial works.
