A netorare story does not have to be a story of betrayal. Seijo no Kenshin earns its place in the hall by proving as much across a single, book-length narrative about two lovers who are pulled apart without ever ceasing to trust each other.
The setting is a fantasy world where a hero is at war with the Demon Lord. The hero's beloved, a saint of the church, submits to a curse laid by the Demon Lord: unless she gives herself to the prince the hero despises most, the hero will never gain the strength to win. It is a netorare work, with chōkyō, or coercive conditioning, also among its listed genres.
Readers keep returning to two things. The curse supplies a reason for a premise that would otherwise strain belief, and the whole volume is given over to one continuous passage of events. The eight chapters open with "The Saint's Wish" and close with "The Hero's Wish", and through all of them the saint's heart never leaves the hero. Because he knows and consents, several readers describe the book as closer to a love story than to the usual tale of deceit. A newly drawn epilogue then lands somewhere neither the Demon Lord nor the prince intended.
chaccu's commercial work goes back to an anthology contribution in 2006, and every collection since has appeared in Kill Time Communication's 2D Dream Comics line. Four of the five books between 2009 and 2016 were adaptations of existing properties; this seventh book is the first long story the artist built without a source to adapt.
Published in 2018. This book stands 38th among the hall's commercial works.
