Manga about another man's wife going under are usually dark. Hajimete no Hitozuma reaches the same destination without carrying the darkness.
The opening sixty-six pages never leave a single situation: a woman about to marry, face to face with her fiancé's father, who is the man she once sold herself to. Elsewhere a mother is asked for payment in kind by the older student who helped her son move, and a girl takes a classmate's troubles seriously. Across the seven stories the heroines are bright women in healthy bodies.
Shinozuka Yuuji's real work is the monologue of the one who cannot refuse. While reason is still assembling its excuse, the body has already answered, and the gap between the two is shown through the order of the panels. This is the point readers converge on: a book built to be read for the process of being carried along. Tall figures, a preference for keeping clothes on, and a firm, legible line all hold that interior movement in place.
It is the second collection by an artist who debuted in COMIC Tenma in 2007. Stories from three magazines were rebuilt, with new material added, into two hundred and forty-four pages.
The opening story was filmed in live action, and from 2020 an animated version followed until it reached six episodes. Message boards in Taiwan still carry the responses to that announcement.
