It portrays the heavy feeling that sinks beneath affection, and still carries each story to where it belongs. Suki no Uragawa stands in the hall for the way it handles that intensity; it is Nanigawa Rui's second book in print.
Set in and around a school, the collection follows love and fixation between teachers and students, classmates and childhood friends, built around the three-part novella Tokubetsu Atsukai. and filled out with shorter pieces. Readers have taken it as a book of pure love that dwells on love's heavier side.
What readers agree on is the weight of the backgrounds and passions the characters carry. Some are troubled at home; the book draws relationships no single emotion can account for, and yet the stories come to rest somewhere that offers relief. A delicate, soft line for faces, and above all the rendering of eyes and tears, conveys what goes unspoken.
Nanigawa Rui made a second debut in COMIC Potpourri Club and received an honourable mention in its Potpourri Prize in 2015. Because the magazine then ceased publication, that made them the last winner of its manga prize. Setting aside one digital-only title, this is their second book from Bunendo.
The print edition appeared in 2019, and DLsite and FANZA each carried a limited edition with added cover illustrations. In the Eromanga Taisho, a readers' poll run by volunteers on the 2channel message board, it tied for second place for 2019. It stands 186th among the hall's commercial works.
