Games have rules, and rules can become the frame of a story. Kaikan Yuugiroku stands in the hall as a twelve-story collection that holds to that idea throughout.
It includes a card game whose battle images take physical form, a three-part sequence about an imaginary mobile game in which players summon and raise girls, and a two-part story about a school club devoted to an imaginary sport played with tentacles. Many of the stories are set at school; by subject the book falls under tentacle and non-human stories, and it includes one story between women.
What readers return to is the idea of turning the format of a game into the structure of a contest. Several reviews single out the sport called Shokushu-dou, the way of the tentacle, as the heart of the fun, a world built out far enough to have its own powerhouse schools. The 216 pages, packed with one-shots on outlandish premises, are part of the appeal too. The summoning-game sequence can also be read against the popularity of smartphone games at the time.
Akari Hidekazu has published collections with Akaneshinsha since 2011. This is the fourth, about five years after the third, and it closes with a short epilogue to that previous book.
The print edition came out in May 2020 under the TENMA COMICS label, with store-specific bonuses. Digital followed on FANZA in June and on DLsite in July, each with its own exclusive extra. It stands 56th among the hall's commercial works.
