Light comic stories and a heavy, mournful serial share the same covers. Kimi no Na o Yobeba enters the hall as Amazume Ryuta's third collection, one that placed high in the 2003 readers' poll and whose title story was later adapted for video.
Of its nine pieces, the center is the title story, told in three parts. Set at an elite boys' school where, under a government scheme, girls are addressed by numbers instead of names and made to serve as the students' sexual partners, it follows one boy who tries to treat a former friend among them as a person; it is a school story whose subject is institutionalized non-consent. Comic short stories make up the rest of the book.
The publisher, too, presents both the lighthearted comedy and the heavier material as the face of the collection. A recommendation written for a retrospective poll in 2011 looks back on adult manga around 2003 and recalls the dark style of Amazume and a few contemporaries as a current of its own.
Amazume later moved to general-audience magazines and became a long-read name there with series such as Toshiue no Kanojo and Nana to Kaoru.
In the Eromanga Taisho for 2003, the book placed fifth, following Okusama wa Shoujo the year before. The title story became a two-volume OVA released from 2008 into 2009. The print edition was published in 2003 by TI-Net under the MUJIN COMICS imprint; the year on the roster, 2020, is that of the digital edition. It stands 225th among the hall's commercial works.
