A device worn smooth by use can still read as something new when the world around it is built with care. Hypno App x Time Stop Fantasia stands in the hall as a case in point.

Into a world of swords and sorcery come two relics of a lost age: a pocket watch, and an app on a smartphone. The book holds two linked series, both fantasies of sexual domination in which stopped time and hypnosis bend women to the holder's will. The two have no direct connection, though hints place them in the same world.

What readers keep returning to is how thoroughly that world and its people are furnished. A court mage, an elven archer, a samurai, a hero: the familiar classes and races of the role-playing game are all here, and the design of costume and gear keeps changing from one figure to the next. Between chapters come pages of detailed notes on each character. Readers also agree that the book does not merely borrow a fashionable premise; it knows the conventions of its material and finds its own ways of working them.

It is Fan no Hitori's fifth book, arriving less than a year after Sennen Reijou: My Lady, My Master. The print edition came out at the very end of December 2020, the digital release in 2021. Some five years would pass before the next collection.
