There is a way of placing the blame for harm in the world itself rather than in any character. Dropout enters the hall on that design.

The title story is set in a school where marks decide a person's worth. Girls who fall short are assigned to sexual service and handed to the students above them. The school's finest steps down into that position of her own accord, and an unremarkable underclassman is made her keeper. Why she stepped down is never put into words.

Because the system has already decided, nobody has to justify anything, and Fan no Hitori's line is free to go entirely to flesh and fluid. Even where a face has fallen completely apart the underlying form holds, and what is happening to whom stays readable. Alongside it the book sets stories of women taken by things that are not human, ranging from the schoolyard to a western, a near future, another world. Readers keep remarking on the nerve of binding nine such unlike pieces into one volume. They also stop at the same place: a heroine who is not brought down but walks down.

It is a first collection, gathered from Comic Unreal and from anthologies. The artist's earliest work is in here too, unaltered. Books followed, and the work on monsters and systems went on.

Published in 2014. Two years later it became a two-episode adult animation, and official translations exist in English, simplified and traditional Chinese, Korean and more. Fifth in the commercial hall.
