Horror in adult manga can put dread and desire on the same sheet of paper. Residence: Yuganda Negai de Shoujo ni Kawaru stands in the hall as a book that holds the two of them at once.
The title work is set in a mansion that turns whoever enters into the woman he has pictured. A man who goes in after treasure is remade, and ends up serving the girl who owns the house. Elsewhere in the volume: a young man reworking his lover into a doll, a schoolgirl whose brain is tampered with until she is a slave, a student council president parasitised and drained by the group. Readers reach for the weird-tale anthology as their comparison.
DATE's line stays inside the transformation rather than after it. The body changes first and the mind catches up later, and the refusal to skip that order sits at the centre of this artist's reputation. A face contorted with fear and the climax that arrives anyway share one panel. That the drawing never turns muddy, however harsh the scene, has been set down many times over.
Four years after the debut, this is a second collection. Neither the publisher nor the magazine had changed since the first. The fourteen pages showing how the title story begins were drawn for this volume.
Two years after publication the title work became a three-part OVA. English-language databases carry an entry for it, and at the storefront one can still find the words of a reader who came back to the manga from the screen.
