Enkou Ojisan stands in the hall for the way it binds ten chapters into a single story, through the design of the one man in its title and a thread of foreshadowing laid from the first chapter to the last.
The "enkou" of the title is a punning spelling of enjo kosai, compensated dating. This adult serial follows a stout middle-aged man and, chapter by chapter, the high-school girls he meets through such arrangements; its subject is prostitution in the form of compensated dating. Asked, in effect, why they took to it, readers most often point to its handling of this subject without furtiveness, in a light tone.
The heart of the drawing is the man himself. Round and soft, he is likened by readers to a stuffed toy or a mascot, given an unthreatening charm and a kindness toward the people he meets. Shiwasu no Okina had long been praised by fellow artists for drawing men with real conviction, and this book puts that strength at the centre.
The construction is careful as well. An offhand moment in the first chapter plants the question of where this man's money comes from, and the final chapter answers it. The stories first ran in COMIC Aun from 2017 into the following year; this is the artist's twenty-first book with Hit Shuppan, from the twenty-second year of a career.
The print edition came out in April 2018 and placed second for that year at Toranoana's Akihabara A store and sixth in FANZA's mail-order chart. An English edition was published by J18 as Mister Angel: Adventures of a Sugar Daddy. It stands 79th among the hall's commercial works.
