The second part of a long saga has to leave its door open to readers who never met the first. Shinkyoku no Grimoire: PANDRA saga 2nd story stands in the hall as the opening volume that served as that door.
The setting is the same school of magic as in the first part. The lead and narrator is Unico, a horned girl who was a supporting character there; she sets out to free people controlled by grimoires modelled on the seven deadly sins, and those she frees join her. In subject matter it is an adult school fantasy built on control of body and mind by the grimoires and on sexual violence, with tentacles and gender transformation among its motifs.
Recovering the grimoires one by one, in a chain of linked episodes, lets a reader who arrives midway follow the plot. DLsite reviews return again and again to the point that the book can be read without its predecessor, and others welcome the promotion of a minor character to the lead. Some note that the line has grown more refined.
It came out in July 2013 as Erect Sawaru's seventh book and the fourth with Kill Time Communication, on the same day as a limited edition. A review published that day observed that the artist had been matching setting to publisher: contemporary Japan for Akane Shinsha, sword-and-sorcery worlds for Comic Unreal.
The second part, too, was later adapted as an OVA. Among the hall's commercial works it stands 32nd, and among the artist's books in the hall only the first volume of the first part ranks higher.
