One subject, carried through an entire book. Ran-Drop! stands in the hall for doing what adult collections rarely attempt, and for doing it with good humour and no gloom.
Its ten stories ran in Comic Unreal over about three years, with the Nyoran! series at their centre. The premise is a world in which a special contraceptive has turned fertilised eggs into food sold in shops, and every story takes egg-laying as its subject; it belongs to what the genre calls the egg-laying story. The later pieces are fantasy one-shots, and incest and aphrodisiac plots are among the subjects.
The subject is one usually bound up with pain and coercion. This book sets that convention aside: there are no dark stories, and the drawing stays light and never tips into the grotesque. Details such as eggs lined up on supermarket shelves give the world a deadpan comedy, and since its release readers have kept remarking how rare it is for a whole collection to hold to a single subject.
It is Marui Maru's ninth book. It includes a side story to Makai Ryuugaku!, the series at the heart of Kemopai: Sakusei Girls, published by the same house three years earlier, so the two books share ground. In the Unreal Comics line it carries the number 200.
The print edition appeared in August 2017 and placed 58th in FANZA's annual mail-order ranking of printed comics; on DLsite it reached first place on both the daily and the weekly charts right after release. It ranks 109th in the commercial hall.
